Spiritual Muscles
"With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies."
Psalm 108:13
During my recent annual physical examination at my family doctor, I heard his annual instructions again, "are you watching your diet, and are you getting enough daily exercise", as I had gained a few pounds since my last checkup. Having worked in the health care profession, I realize that we develop muscles through exercise, and it is through this resistance that we become stronger. In the same way, the Bible tells us that we only become stronger spiritually through exercise. We need the "spiritual muscles" to meet the challenges of life. This is especially true when we face suffering and affliction, for they are one of God's ways to make us strong. One reason God allows suffering to come to His people, according to the Bible is to discipline, chasten, and mold us. The way we develop our spiritual muscles is by reading our Bible, praying daily and developing a closer relationship with God. When we walk with God each day, and have a close personal relationship with Him, He is there to help us do battle with any of the challenges that we will face on a daily basis. We build our "spiritual muscles" by this daily devotion to God, as we make Him first in all that we do. This is the reason that we see so many weak spiritual Christians, as they make God first in their life only on Sunday morning, and then forget about Him the rest of their week. If we need God's "spiritual muscles", we have to exercise our faith each and every day, not just on Sunday. It is much like trying to lose weight by exercising only one time a week, as we will fail miserably. Take a few moments today to spend time with God, and exercise your "spiritual muscles", and let Him strengthen you to deal with your earthly cares and worries
